Art off the Rock 2010 - Lot 30 'Horse Play' by George Gilbert RSW RWS

George Gilbert RSW RWS
‘Horse Play’
58 x 50cm
Watercolour

Background
George Gilbert trained at Glasgow School of Art under William Armour and David Donaldson. After teaching for 25 years in schools in Aberdeenshire, Glasgow and Fife, he became a full-time painter in 1989.

Influences

When he first visited St Monans in Fife in 1965 he was unaware that the village had been painted by many Scottish artists including Bessie McNicol and WG Gillies. The East Neuk of Fife became his source of inspiration for the following three decades. He is interested in the way light animates the objects in his studio, and the harbours and landscapes where he lives.

Exhibitions & Collections
He has exhibited work throughout the UK and USA including the Cleveland Drawing Biennale, the RWS summer show and Pittenweem Arts Festival. His work is held in public collections including: Fife Council; Paintings in Hospitals; Nuffield Foundation; Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons, Glasgow.

The Guthrie Portrait Prize; W.G. Gillies Award and the Strathearn Gallery Award.
